摘要

Myopia progression in children is due to abnormal axial elongation. Thus, progression and the effects of treatment may be monitored by either refractive error or axial length. There are several reasons why axial length measurement is important, and indeed, preferable in monitoring progression:

• Optical biometers are at least 5-times more sensitive than refraction (Brennan et al., 2021).
• No cycloplegia is required (Sheng et al., 2004).
• Treatments, particularly orthokeratology, influence the optics of the eye and thus contaminate refractive error measurements (Brennan et al., 2021).
• Axial length is more closely associated with visual impairment than refractive error (Tideman et al., 2015).
• The International Myopia Institute states that “the end goal of all clinical trials for myopia control should be reduction of axial elongation” (Wolffsohn et al., 2019).
