Find an Optometrist

Our History

The Hong Kong Society of Professional Optometrists (HKSPO) was founded in 1982 by a dedicated group of optometry graduates who had studied overseas. Since its inception, the society has played a crucial role in the development and advancement of the optometry profession in Hong Kong. Over the years, the profession has experienced significant growth, with approximately 1,200 optometrists registered as Part I practitioners. Today, HKSPO proudly boasts nearly 800 members.

Our members come from diverse educational backgrounds, with qualifications primarily obtained from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, alongside various esteemed optometry schools at universities around the globe. This diverse training ensures that our members are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills in the field of optometry. All members of the society are officially registered in the Hong Kong Government Register for Optometrists, with the majority classified as Part I optometrists and some as Part II. Through continuous professional development and education, HKSPO is committed to enhancing the quality of eye care services available in Hong Kong, fostering a culture of excellence among its members.

On the international stage, HKSPO is a proud country member of the World Council of Optometry (WCO) and holds ordinary membership in the Asia Pacific Council of Optometry (APCO). Locally, we are also an associate member of the Federation of Medical Societies of Hong Kong (FMSHK). These affiliations not only strengthen our professional network but also allow us to contribute to the global advancement of optometry and eye care standards.
In addition to our advocacy and support for optometrists, Clinical and Experimental Optometry is HKSPO’s official journal. We are also the organizer of the ASIA Cornea and Contact Lens Conference (ACCLC), which serves as a platform for professionals to share insights and advance knowledge in cornea and contact lens care.

Prime Objectives of the HKSPO

To promote and improve the science and practice of optometry for the public benefit.
